Freedom to Vote Act: Round 1 Win
Sen. Chuck Schumer's push to pass S.2747, the so-called Freedom to Vote Act, ended on Wednesday, when the procedural vote to begin debate was 49 (yes) to 51 (no), a count short of the 60 votes needed to proceed. The Republicans were unanimous in their no votes. Call Senators Burr and Tillis to thank them for voting no. Then stay vigilant. The Democrats are inching closer to ending the filibuster; they then would be able to pass the legislation to federalize our elections. No doubt the Bill will return, perhaps by yet another benevolent sounding name.
The purpose of the Freedom to Vote Act is "To expand Americans' access to the ballot box and reduce the influence of big money in politics and for other purposes." Sounds great, right? The fact that it wants to expand Americans' rights (note: not citizens') to the ballot box and introduce other purposes should make everyone do a double take. Lipstick on this pig doesn't hide another attempt to federalize our elections.
Here is an example of one justification listed for the Act:
"Recent elections and studies have shown that minority communities wait longer in lines to vote, are more likely to have their mail ballots rejected, continue to face intimidation at the polls, are more likely to be disenfranchised by voter purges, and are disproportionately burdened by excessively onerous voter identification and other voter restrictions. Research shows that communities of color are more likely to face nearly every barrier to voting than their white counterparts."
The Bill contains possibly everything the Left could want in an election.
